My introduction to a strange but beautiful world
There are many instances in our life when we come across a very beautiful thing in our general life. This rarely obtained object keeps you spell bounded for days. It comes in your dreams and provide immense happiness from inside. One such thing recently which came to my life was a book titled “The little book of Hygge-The Danish way to live well” written by Meik Wiking.
The most special thing about this book is its creative designing (which makes it a perfect gift as well). I can bet that a voracious reader and even a non-book lover will finish it within few hours because once you flip its first page, you can’t stop till your eyes (or you) gets tired and sleep.
The moment anyone will see the cover of this page, the person will definitely google about Hygge. It is a beautiful word pronounced as “hoo-gah” which itself will give you a hurray moment. Speaking it for few times will automatically give you a minor happiness shock. This shock will act as an initial thrust for a beautiful journey which you are going to hop on as you will flip through pages.
Danish people are ranked as one of the most happiest people in the world. This book explores the reason behind their happiness. And the secret lies in the concept of Hygge.
The concept of Hygge
Hygge word dedicates itself to keep the human species happy. It feels as if its utter goal in its creation is to keep everyone’s happy and give a good life. We all agree that we are happy being cosy. Hygge means ‘cosiness’ or ‘ to be in comfort zone’. We can also take it as expansion of our comfort zone to include others. This concept exist in some other countries also but with a different terminology. For ex- Gezelligheid (Netherlands), Koselig (Norway), Gemu Hichkeit (Germany).
It urges for a strong social relationship (humans are social animal). Such relations can be infused with sweet elements such as baking together, preparing and having hot drinks and starting a food club.
It all can be done easily in the headquarter of Hygge. Yes, Headquarter. Our home is the headquarter of Hygge. To cherish cosy moments every day, we just have to go to home, light scented candles, dress casually, sit in a corner couch with a blanket covering our body, a book in hand and that’s it. That’s Hygge.
My version of Hygge equation
Hygge program = corner of room to read & to drink + ceramic materials + candle + fireplace + wooden materials + Nature (plants) + books + chocolate + vintage collections + blankets & cushions + socks + old letters + notebook + paper & pen + music
An important point is that doing all such activities need not to be done in a rush. Instead Hygge is humble and slow. We just have to learn to appreciate simple pleasures in our life.
It is choosing rustic over new, simple over posh and ambience over excitement. Just go slow and live simply.
Why to read?
There are many reasons why I would keep it on a “must-read” category out of which some are-
- It is a book. Book. Book.
- It is a book with beautiful pictures and coloured pages with less words. Creative designing is at its best.
- It gives us a glimpse to how Danish attain one of the life’s objective i.e. to attain happiness using some simple tricks.
- It is new knowledge for me. I never heard this concept in my life so far.
- It is a good company beside your bed.
- It gives a new perspective for life. It changes the way we perceive this world.
The last reason is “because Vimanyu is recommending it”…hahahaha…
I am thankful to my manager Ankit who gave me this book.
Great book and more importantly you depicted so well the concept of being hygge.
